Venice's Six Districts
& Lido Island
Venice is divided into six districts, known as "sestiere"
(for a map,
click here). Each of these districts has
a distinctive style and history, and we've provided
a brief overview so that you can choose the area
that best suits you, or holds your interest more
than another. Whichever area you choose, Venice is a
small city, where you can walk from one end to the
other in about an hour. On the other hand, you could
stay forever, and never know all her secrets, or see
all her treasures. Getting lost is one of the most
pleasurable treats here in Venice.

San Marco
For centuries, San Marco has been the commercial,
spiritual, and municipal center of Venice. That
tradition continues today and most of the high-end
shopping and lodging is located in this district.
San Marco also abounds with cafes and restaurants of
varying quality, having in common for the most part
their rather exorbitant costs. The area has the
definite benefit of being at the heart of the city's
historic center, with many museums, churches, and
other attractions within easy reach. Here you'll
find the Palazzo Ducale, The Bridge of Sighs, and
the Basilica di San Marco all within two minutes of
each other! |

Castello
Mysterious Castello, with its Arsenale haunted by
phantom fleets of Venetian trading vessels and
warships, its still, silent calli and the plaintive
cries of the seagulls heading for the open sea, is
the milieu for a contemplative view of Venice. But
seriously, Castello offers peace and quiet just five
to ten minutes from Piazza San Marco, depending upon
the apartment you choose. There is a fascinating
Naval History museum, Vivaldi's church, and the
lovely public gardens where the Venice Biennale is
held. Add excellent dining (everything from Chinese
to Venetian) to the mix, and you've got the recipe
for a truly satisfying vacation. |

Santa Croce
Santa Croce, is the area which includes the public
garage, ferryboat to Lido, the Maritime Port, and
some of Venice's most ancient buildings. This is a
good place to stay if you're planning regular day
trips outside of the city during your stay. The San
Marco public garage is a short walk from anywhere in
the district, as is the train station. The area is
mostly residential, and many students from the
University live here during the school year.

Dorsoduro
Dorsoduro is a quiet residential area, preferred by
artists and writers for generations. It is home to
the Accademia, Venice's principal museum of fine
art. You'll also find one of the world's great
museums of modern art, The Peggy Guggenheim
Collection, as well as countless trattorias,
restaurants, bars and bakeries. This Sestiere boasts
some of the most enchanting side canals and bridges
in the entire city. If you're looking for a
neighborhood atmosphere away from the crowds, but
within reach of all the major tourist attractions
Venice has to offer, ask us about Dorsoduro! |

San Polo
San Polo, home to the famous Rialto Bridge and
market, is a lively, bustling district which has
everything from vendors of wild game and exotic
fruits, to a Mcdonald's restaurant housed in a 16th
century palazzo. You'll find something for every
taste here, including some of the finest Venetian
restaurants. There is a wide range of bargain
shopping, plenty of banks, change services and
crafts of every kind. The fun really heats up in the
summer; an outdoor "sit-in" movie theater goes up in
beautiful Campo San Polo, and if the movie's a dog,
you can always gaze up ath stars and the lovely
silhouettes of the palazzi which ring the Campo.
Afterward it's time for a gelato, or maybe a
nightcap in one of the bustling bars or bacari that
line the district, and a nice passeggiata home. If
this sounds like your cup of espresso, maybe San
Polo is in your vacation future.... |

Cannaregio
Cannaregio is one of the most fascinating districts
in Venice. It is very convenient as a base for those
who arrive by car or train, as both the garage and
the station are just minutes away on foot from any
part of the sestiere. This colorful area is said by
the Venetians who live here to most closely resemble
the Venice of old. It has an easily identifiable
neighborhood atmosphere, and is brimming with small
artisan shops, butchers, clothing and specialty
stores.
Cannaregio was also
home to the Jews of Venice, who were confined to its
Ghetto (from geto, the venetian word for foundry)
for several hundred years. The Ca' d'Oro, one of the
most beautiful buildings anywhere in the world,
hosts a fascinating collection of Venetian artifacts
from the 17th century and earlier, including the
entire intact bedroom of a 16th century Venetian
noblewoman. The area abounds with small restaurants,
bars and wine bars (bacari, enoteca) where you can
(as the University students) always find some good,
reasonably priced food and drink or that quick
snack. Try Cannaregio for a different side of
Venice!

represents a natural barrier between Venice and the
open sea.
Walking along the sea-front road, we can find

Bains Hotel. Fine-sand beaches, “capanne” and “murazzi”,
artificial rocks in Istria stone serve as a strong
protection against the strength of the sea during
stormy winter months.
There are many things to see on Lido such as the San
Nicolò Church with works by Giovanni da Crema and
Palma il Giovane, or visit the adjacent Benedictine
Monastery and the beautiful 1500 cloister, which, in
addition to the very interesting Jewish Cemetery,
are the most relevant artistic sites to be
discovered on this island. Finally, in September the
